Aloha and Happy New Year!

The Navy League Annual meeting will be held January 15th. At this event we will celebrate our 2025 successes, swear in new Board members, and share what we are looking forward to in 2026.

                Thursday - January 15, 2026

Ala Moana Hotel – Hibiscus Ballroom

410 Atkinson Drive, Hon., HI 96814

                               6:00 P.M. – 6:45 P.M. No Host Cocktails

                               6:45 P.M. – 7:45 P.M. Dinner Buffet

                               7:45 P.M. – 8:45 P.M. Program

Coast Guard - Tropical Blues, Navy - Summer Whites/Service Uniform, Marines - Blue Deltas, Civilians - Aloha Crisp

In 2025 we met our ships, submarines, and cutters returning from deployment or stopping by Pearl Harbor on their way to Guam or the INDOPACIFIC. We celebrated changes of home ports and change of commands for our services and sea service assets. We remained steadfast in our efforts to advocate for our diligent merchant marines, who continue to keep supplies moving through ports across the State and the Pacific. The Honolulu Council worked every day to make sure we continued to “serve those who serve!”

We would also like to provide you with an opportunity to make a tax-deductible donation to sponsor a service member, a midshipmen, or a sea cadet to attend the annual meeting! Please indicate below how you would like to support!

Thank you, thank you for your support and we look forward to your joining us as we kick off Honolulu Navy League 2026!

Warm regards,

Jane Ferreira

Executive Director

I would like to sponsor a Sea Cadet, Midshipman or an Active-Duty service member – contact our office if you have any questions at (808) 422-9404 or NLHCEvents@gmail.com.

Kapono’s to launch new location in Hawaii Kai

expand

Kapono's At The Lounge will open Dec. 31.

Kapono's At The Lounge

By Virginia Noone – Reporter, Pacific Business News

Dec 5, 2025

A new music venue created in partnership with famed Hawaii musician Henry Kapono is slated to open in Hawaii Kai on New Year’s Eve.

The waterfront venue, Kapono’s at the Lounge, will be located inside Hawaii Kai marina recording studio, Island Sound Studios, in a venue formerly called The Lounge. Kapono’s at The Lounge is a collaboration between Henry Kapono, the Henry Kapono Foundation and The Lounge.

This opening night carries special meaning: It comes exactly 20 years to the day since the original Kapono’s at Aloha Tower Marketplace bid farewell with its legendary New Year’s Eve celebration,” the company said in a statement. “The epic party marked the end of a remarkable 10-year run that helped define Honolulu’s live music scene from 1995 to 2005.”

The venue will now be home to the Henry Kapono Foundation, Kapono’s at The Lounge, Island Sound Studios’ two studios and The Velvet Monkey, a speakeasy.

This partnership is more than a venue launch,” said Lezlee Kaʻaihue, executive director of the Henry Kapono Foundation, in a statement. Its about creating a true home for Hawaiis music a place where artists and audiences can come together to celebrate, uplift and inspire.

Henry Kapono Ka‘aihue is a Grammy-nominated, multi-award-winning Native Hawaiian singer-songwriter.

Many award-winning artists have spent time at Island Sound Studios, including Beyoncé, John Legend and Eminem.

For decades, Island Sound Studios has been a creative home for chart-topping and Grammy-winning artists,” said Bryan and Kyle Spicer, co-owners of Island Sound Studios, in a statement. “Kapono’s at The Lounge expands that legacy into a live venue and creative hub for Hawaii’s music community.”

December 2025

Aloha e Association Board Directors

and Branch Board of Managers,

Last week, we had the pleasure of gathering many of our Association Board, Branch Boards of Managers, and special guests and supporters at our Annual Holiday Social. It was a wonderful evening to connect and express our sincere appreciation for all of you as volunteer leaders and partners who give so generously of your talent and heart to our YMCA.

While not everyone was able to attend, I wanted to share a brief reflection that connects where we have been, achieved together, and are headed.

As we close out 2025, we are also closing an important chapter with the completion of our 2023–2025 strategic plan. It was a plan that kept us focused on addressing some of the most critical needs facing our communities: advancing holistic health, helping youth reach their fullest potential, and strengthening our organization so more people across our communities can find belonging, connection, and well-being.

I am proud to share that we delivered on that promise.

For our kūpuna, we more than doubled the number served, growing from 4,894 to 8,500. Through our Kūpuna Food and Fun program, we now provide more than 42,000 meals each year across six sites, paired with wellness classes and kūpuna-centered workshops. Most importantly, nearly 100 percent of participating kūpuna report a stronger sense of belonging, connection, and support.

For youth mental wellness, the impact has been equally significant. From January through November of this year alone, the Y served 5,062 youth, meeting 100 percent of our goal. This included both prevention and intervention services. The YMCA has become a trusted and stabilizing presence for young people and their families.

We also strengthened holistic health for all. By the end of 2025, more than 15,000 members were actively finding wellness at the Y. Thousands of individuals and families are rebuilding healthy routines, strengthening relationships, and reconnecting to community.

For keiki and teens, goals were exceeded. Preschool expanded to 303 seats, helping more families access early learning and care. Our teen and young adult leadership programs served 1,513 participants, preparing the next generation for college, careers, and civic leadership.

This progress has been matched by extraordinary philanthropic leadership in support of our reimagined Nuʻuanu YMCA, a project that will include affordable housing. Together, we have announced transformational gifts including a $5 million lead gift from The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation, $3 million from the David C. Ai Charitable Trust, and $300,000 from Hawaiʻi State Federal Credit Union and Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines.

$1 Million

Most recently, we were honored to announce a $1 million gift from Nan Shin and Nan, Inc., recognizing the legacy of former YMCA CEO Don Anderson. Once complete, the new gym at our reimagined Nuʻuanu YMCA will carry Don’s name and continue his lifelong work of bringing people together.

See the heart behind this gift with this short tribute video:

You can also read the Pacific Business News coverage here.

As we look ahead, we are putting the final touches on our 2026–2028 strategic plan. Informed and shaped by the voices of our community, stakeholders, volunteer leaders, and staff. The plan focuses on the most critical issues facing our community today and where our YMCA is uniquely positioned to make a meaningful difference. We look forward to sharing the full plan in early 2026.

This moment also aligns beautifully with the launch of our national YMCA campaign, No Place Like This. Because there truly is no place like the Y for friendship that feels like ʻohana, for wellness that supports the whole person, for connection that creates belonging, and for potential that is seen, nurtured, and encouraged at every age.

And there is no place like this without an extraordinary community of volunteer leaders like you.

Thank you for your leadership, your partnership, and your belief in the mission of the YMCA of Honolulu. Because of you, we close this year stronger and ready for what comes next.

Lisa Ontai
Interim President & CEO

Six YMCAs Conference in Taipei

I had the opportunity, along with our Senior Program Executive Director Jon Cho, to join CEOs and rising leadership staff from five YMCA associations across the Asia-Pacific region at the 29th Six YMCAs Conference, hosted by Taipei YMCA in conjunction with its 80th anniversary celebration.

Centered on the theme “YMCA Strategy and Organizational Resilience in a Changing World,” leaders explored how YMCAs can continue delivering relevant services and sustaining lasting impact in an era of rapid change.

For nearly three decades, the Six YMCAs Conference has brought together YMCA leaders from Hong Kong, Osaka, Seoul, Taipei, Singapore, and Honolulu to share best practices, strengthen relationships, develop shared global solutions, and provide emerging leaders the opportunity to see themselves as changemakers both within their local communities and as part of a connected global movement.

7 Things We Can Do to Start the New Year Off Right

Mary Kelly, Commander, USN, CSP, CPAE

Keynote Speaker and Corporate Advisor - Lead confidently through crises, challenges, and change| Former Navy Intel Officer| Author of You Next| Hall of Fame Speaker, Economist, Board member, Philanthropist, Podcaster

January 8, 2026

The start of a new year feels like a fresh beginning.

It is a clean page, a reset button, and a chance to decide who we want to be and what we want to focus on.

The truth is, most of us start the year with good intentions but no real plan to achieve them. We make resolutions that fade before February because we want change, but we forget to create a structure to make it happen.

We probably do not need a total life overhaul. We might just need to shift a few intentional actions that help us start strong and stay steady in pursuit of what we genuinely want.

Here are seven things we can do to start the new year off right personally, practically, and powerfully.

1. Reflect Before We Reset

Before we rush into the new year, let us take time to look back.

Ask: • What are we proud of from last year? • What, or who, gave us positive energy? • What did we learn about ourselves? • What do we like about who we are right now?

Reflection builds awareness, and awareness drives better decisions.

Let us not skip this step. Growth does not come from a new calendar — it comes from what we have learned from the old one.

2. Choose a Theme Instead of a List of Resolutions

For many of us, resolutions can feel fragile while themes offer flexibility and direction.

We can choose a single word or phrase that captures what we want this year to mean something like growth, focus, grace, health, boundaries, or adventure.

Write it down. Put it on the mirror, desk, dashboard, or phone. Let it guide our daily decisions.

With a theme, we can course-correct without guilt because it is a compass, not a checklist.

3. Declutter Our Space and Our Mind

We cannot move forward if we are tripping over last year’s clutter.

Let us clear out closets, files, inboxes, and to-do lists. Release habits, items, and even relationships that no longer serve us.

A clear space creates a clear head, and a clear head makes better choices.

If something no longer fits our goals, our schedule, or our energy, it is okay to release it.

4. Recommit to Our Health

Our bodies are our engines, so let us treat them like we plan to use them for a long time.

That does not mean extreme diets or gym marathons. It means small, consistent, healthy choices: • Walk more. • Drink more water. • Get enough sleep. • Eat real food. • See our doctors.

We cannot pour into others when we are running on empty. Taking care of ourselves is not selfish, it is sustainable.

5. Reconnect with People Who Matter

This one is my favorite. I keep a list of people who teach me how to be a better friend because they are AMAZING friends. They send the notes, make the calls, find the time for coffee or dinner, and they show up. (Ross Bernstein, I am looking at you!)

One of the best ways to recharge our energy and outlook is to reconnect with the people who make our lives better.

Let us reach out to those who lift us up, make us laugh, and remind us of who we are at our best. Send the text. Make the call. Write the note. Schedule the lunch, the coffee, or the walk.

Reconnection does not have to be grand. Sometimes it is just a simple “Hey, I was thinking about you.”

If we have not talked in years, we can start with kindness and curiosity, not guilt. “It’s been a while, and I’d love to catch up” works far better than “Sorry I disappeared.”

Reconnecting can also mean repairing where we can. If we miss someone because of misunderstanding, pride, or time, maybe it is worth mending. A simple apology, a thoughtful note, or a quiet conversation can go a long way.

And yes, part of reconnecting is recognizing where we might need to step back. If a relationship consistently drains our peace or adds stress without joy, it is okay to release it with grace.

Our relationships shape our resilience. Let us fill our circle with people who challenge us, cheer for us, and remind us that we are not alone in this life.

Let us not just think about the important people in our lives. Let us actually strengthen those connections.

6. Set Two Small, Specific Goals and Start Now

Forget the extensive list of impossible resolutions. Let us pick two meaningful goals and take two small steps toward them this week.

Want to save more? Let us open the account. Want to read more? Let us pick the first book. Want to move more? Let us walk around the block.

Momentum does not come from thinking — it comes from doing.

And if we realize one of those goals is not right, we can change direction. Progress beats perfection every time.

7. Practice Gratitude Daily

Gratitude is not a mood; it is a muscle. The more we use it, the stronger it gets.

Let us start and end each day by naming three things we are thankful for, both big and small.

Gratitude does not erase challenges, but it keeps us from being consumed by them. It shifts our focus from what is missing to what is meaningful.

And that shift changes everything.

The Bottom Line

Starting the new year off right is not about becoming different people. It is about becoming more intentional versions of ourselves.

Let us reflect on what matters and simplify what does not. Let us reconnect with the people who make life worthwhile. And let us take two steps forward and keep going.

Every year, every month, every week, and every day is an opportunity to design a better version of our life, one decision, one relationship, and one grateful moment at a time.

Lauren Lawley Head, writer, as seen in TBJ Content Studio on Sept. 10, 2025. Lauren is a fulltime journalist and the founder and CEO of Lawley Head Media, LLC and a resident of Dallas, Texas. Ms. Head wrote an article about Mayo Clinic Cardiologist Dr. Stephen Kopecky who has recurring cancer after 14 years. Now with a wife and three little children, his goal is to see his children graduate from grade school. His motto is: Death is inevitable, but premature death is not …. Dr. Kopecky says that mental health has a significant impact on physical health. … The single largest psychological cause of heart disease mortality is pessimism; and pessimism has increased dramatically recently. Steps to increase optimism can yield big results.

A premature death has a way of putting parents and other family members in a state of complete devastation and becoming emotionally drained. This young doctor who often has a positive outlook for his patients, helping them to live longer, is now trying to have a more positive outlook on life for himself.

I have some good advice for him. We don’t know from the article whether he has a Pre-Plan or not, but it would make his optimism a little less difficult to achieve by knowing that he has already pre-planned for himself, his wife and children. In doing so, he can prevent some of their personal suffering and stress from getting any worse, while trying to arrange his sudden funeral/burial. He knows what’s in store for him, everything except the date.

Stay optimistic by just giving me a call. I will help you with your and your family’s Pre-Plans for traditional/casket or cremation. You can make the decisions now as to where you will be buried, or whether your wishes are to be cremated and your ashes scattered, or whether you want a niche, a family plot, or have your own mausoleum, etc. By being completely prepared, you will be able to give peace of mind to those close to you and to yourself. I can help you just like I have assisted more than 10,000 Hawaii families and individuals make their plans for cremation or burial.

You can also add a lifetime travel plan for $599 in case you or your children should die while away from home. This life-time travel plan will bring your body back home—a procedure that can cost thousands of dollars and occurs more often than you may think. Please ask me about the Family-First Protection Plan to cover children and grandchildren until they are 21. Please do this while you still can, and those who love you can rest easy knowing your choices will be honored. A Pre-Plan is a positive thing to have. We hope Dr. Kopecky has his.
