What if the future of clean energy depends on unlikely partnerships between oil and gas companies and climate advocates? In this thought-provoking episode of The Solar Coaster, I sit down with Reverend Kevin Taylor—a faith leader who's navigated the intersection of ministry, clean energy innovation, and controversial industry partnerships. Reverend Taylor reveals how his solar journey began when a Boston church became the first in the 5,000-church AME connection to install solar panels, why churches make perfect but underutilized solar candidates despite funding challenges, and how the absence of tax credits creates barriers for nonprofits.

The Future of the Fed

There are two very important meetings about monetary policy this week but, so far, most of the public only knows about one of them.

On Wednesday the Federal Reserve will decide what to do about short-term interest rates and both the futures market and our economics team thinks the Fed will almost certainly reduce rates by another quarter percentage point, just like it’s done at the last two meetings in September and October.

That meeting will also bring forth a new set of economic projections for the next couple of years – don’t expect fireworks – and will end with a press conference with Fed Chairman Jerome Powell, where he will provide hints about additional Fed moves, if any, in the early part of next year.  We think Powell will signal that investors should assume rate cuts will come more staggered; like every other meeting, rather than at every meeting in early 2026.

But the other monetary policy event, the one that fewer are paying attention to, might be much more important in the long run.  That’s a hearing to be held on Thursday, by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, Rand Paul, titled “The Fed’s Big Bank Welfare Program: Oversight of the Fed’s IORB Regime.”  (Full Disclosure: Brian Wesbury will be testifying at this hearing while the Fed is sending former Vice Chair of the Fed, Donald Kohn.)

One reason this hearing is important is because it dovetails with President Trump looking for a successor to Jerome Powell.  As of this weekend it looks like Kevin Hassett, the head of Trump’s National Economic Council, has the insider track, but we wouldn’t count out former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh.

Either way, the new leader at the Fed, who would likely replace Powell by May, would have the power to shift the Fed in a very different direction.  Monetary policy would still be made by the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), which includes the full slate of Fed Governors headquartered in Washington, as well as a rotating portion of the regional Fed bank presidents.  But the new Fed chief would have a 4-3 Trump appointed majority on the Board.

That 4-3 majority is important because if the Board wants, it could vote to remove regional bank presidents.  In theory, these removals are only supposed to be “for cause” but some regional bank presidents might not fight the pressure.  It is true that bank presidents could go to court, like embattled Fed Governor Lisa Cook, but the courts might be less likely to fight a Fed majority asking for removal versus Trump asking for himself, like he did with Governor Cook.  We don’t think courts have jurisdiction over the internal workings of the Fed and it’s hard to imagine them telling the Fed which votes it must accept on policy decisions.

In the meantime, Treasury Secretary Bessent has suggested changes to the antiquated system of regional Fed banks, a system which dates back more than a century.  He suggested requiring any potential President of a regional Fed Bank to have been a resident of that district for at least three years.  We would go even further and suggest reducing or even eliminating the regional banks and the duplication of all sorts of functions, to streamline the system and reduce spending at the central bank.

Another huge issue is that the Fed has been losing money hand over fist the last couple of years because it’s paying banks interest on the massive amounts of reserves it’s pumped into the financial system, while earning less yield on the debt securities the Fed itself owns.

Senators Ted Cruz, Rick Scott, and Rand Paul have bills to end these payments.  We think these bills are a great start but the process needs to be handled with delicacy as the payments are the counterpart to the abundant monetary policy regime the Fed embarked on almost twenty years ago with multiple rounds of Quantitative Easing.  Both these policies should be wound down at the same time and the Fed prevented from embarking on similar policies in the future.

Yet another issue investors need to pay attention to is that the Fed is in the process of reducing the liquidity requirements it imposes on banks while it is still cutting short-term rates and ending quantitative tightening.  In turn, this set of policies could result in a pick-up in the growth rate of M2.  The surge in M2 in 2020-21 was the harbinger of the inflation surge in 2021-22.  Then the drop in M2 from mid-2022 through 2023 signaled the current slowdown in inflation.

The M2 money supply is up 4.7% from a year ago.  That is consistent with some continued moderation in inflation.  But if recent policy measures, like loosening the liquidity ratio, lead to a pick-up in M2 growth, then the Fed will be further delayed in getting inflation down to its 2.0% target.

Either way, this is a key week for monetary policy, both in the short-term and, potentially, the long run.

Kapono’s to launch new location in Hawaii Kai

expand

Kapono's At The Lounge will open Dec. 31.

KAPONO'S AT THE LOUNGE

By Virginia Noone – Reporter, Pacific Business News

Dec 5, 2025

A new music venue created in partnership with famed Hawaii musician Henry Kapono is slated to open in Hawaii Kai on New Year’s Eve.

The waterfront venue, Kapono’s at the Lounge, will be located inside Hawaii Kai marina recording studio, Island Sound Studios, in a venue formerly called The Lounge. Kapono’s at The Lounge is a collaboration between Henry Kapono, the Henry Kapono Foundation and The Lounge.

This opening night carries special meaning: It comes exactly 20 years to the day since the original Kapono’s at Aloha Tower Marketplace bid farewell with its legendary New Year’s Eve celebration,” the company said in a statement. “The epic party marked the end of a remarkable 10-year run that helped define Honolulu’s live music scene from 1995 to 2005.”

The venue will now be home to the Henry Kapono Foundation, Kapono’s at The Lounge, Island Sound Studios’ two studios and The Velvet Monkey, a speakeasy.

This partnership is more than a venue launch,” said Lezlee Kaʻaihue, executive director of the Henry Kapono Foundation, in a statement. “It’s about creating a true home for Hawaii’s music — a place where artists and audiences can come together to celebrate, uplift and inspire.”

Henry Kapono Ka‘aihue is a Grammy-nominated, multi-award-winning Native Hawaiian singer-songwriter.

Many award-winning artists have spent time at Island Sound Studios, including Beyoncé, John Legend and Eminem.

For decades, Island Sound Studios has been a creative home for chart-topping and Grammy-winning artists,” said Bryan and Kyle Spicer, co-owners of Island Sound Studios, in a statement. “Kapono’s at The Lounge expands that legacy into a live venue and creative hub for Hawaii’s music community.”

One of my favorite parts of camp is the opportunities we provide our older core leaders to create, from ropes events to energizers and academics. As leaders grow they move into shaping the experience itself. They design new activities refine existing ones problem-solve in real time and help build something better for the campers coming behind them.

In Bloom’s Taxonomy this is the highest level of learning,
Creating. It is where they produce something new. This is where our core leaders now live and it is one of the most meaningful and joyful parts of what we do. Delorese always reminded us of Kaizen, continual improvement, and I see that alive in our leaders every year as they make things better than the last. That growth ripples down to our younger leaders and to our campers in powerful ways.

Funding for Program Development and Supplies is what makes this level of leadership possible. Without fresh tools materials and creative space our older leaders lose the opportunity to grow at this level and they begin to tap out. With support they stay engaged inspired and invested in building what comes next.

~ Jeannette

Dylan Tupper, Core Leader and Legacy Leader, (second generation graduate,) brainstorming and testing out a new ground challenge with graduates at a Super Saturday.

For 40 years Winners’ Camp has delivered transformational experiences through challenge connection and leadership. From the ropes course to the Course Room to Super Saturdays every activity is designed to help teens build confidence communication and character.

What many people do not see is what it takes behind the scenes to keep these experiences safe engaging and effective year after year. Equipment wears out supplies get used curriculum evolves and leaders continue to grow in their training and skills.

That is why Program Development and Supplies is a key focus of our $40K for 40 Years campaign.

Why Program Development and Supplies Matter

Your support allows us to:

  • Maintain and replace ropes course gear and safety equipment
(New helmets & belay ropes in 2026!)

  • Stock the Course Room with leadership tools learning materials and activity supplies

  • Provide kitchen items dorm essentials and wellbeing necessities that support daily camp life

  • Invest in new curriculum and leadership development resources

  • Cover leader training fees and certification requirements
(First Aid, CPR & AED Certifications this past summer!)

  • Keep Super Saturdays and follow-up programs relevant engaging and impactful

These are the tools that turn intention into action. They are what allow us to safely challenge teens to step forward speak up trust others and believe in themselves.

Why It Matters to Teens

Every breakthrough moment is supported by something tangible.
A helmet that protects.
A rope that holds.
A chair in the Course Room.
A workbook that guides reflection.
A trained leader who knows how to meet a teen where they are.

When you invest in program development you are directly investing in the quality of each camper’s experience and the consistency of what they take home into their lives.

Your Role in the Next 40 Years

The same community spirit that built this camp continues to fuel it. Families alumni leaders volunteers and donors all play a role in keeping Winners’ Camp experiences strong for the next generation.

Join the movement. Be part of the legacy. Empower the future.

Lauren Lawley Head, writer, as seen in TBJ Content Studio on Sept. 10, 2025. Lauren is a fulltime journalist and the founder and CEO of Lawley Head Media, LLC and a resident of Dallas, Texas. Ms. Head wrote an article about Mayo Clinic Cardiologist Dr. Stephen Kopecky who has recurring cancer after 14 years. Now with a wife and three little children, his goal is to see his children graduate from grade school. His motto is: Death is inevitable, but premature death is not …. Dr. Kopecky says that mental health has a significant impact on physical health. … The single largest psychological cause of heart disease mortality is pessimism; and pessimism has increased dramatically recently. Steps to increase optimism can yield big results.

A premature death has a way of putting parents and other family members in a state of complete devastation and becoming emotionally drained. This young doctor who often has a positive outlook for his patients, helping them to live longer, is now trying to have a more positive outlook on life for himself.

I have some good advice for him. We don’t know from the article whether he has a Pre-Plan or not, but it would make his optimism a little less difficult to achieve by knowing that he has already pre-planned for himself, his wife and children. In doing so, he can prevent some of their personal suffering and stress from getting any worse, while trying to arrange his sudden funeral/burial. He knows what’s in store for him, everything except the date.

Stay optimistic by just giving me a call. I will help you with your and your family’s Pre-Plans for traditional/casket or cremation. You can make the decisions now as to where you will be buried, or whether your wishes are to be cremated and your ashes scattered, or whether you want a niche, a family plot, or have your own mausoleum, etc. By being completely prepared, you will be able to give peace of mind to those close to you and to yourself. I can help you just like I have assisted more than 10,000 Hawaii families and individuals make their plans for cremation or burial.

You can also add a lifetime travel plan for $599 in case you or your children should die while away from home. This life-time travel plan will bring your body back home—a procedure that can cost thousands of dollars and occurs more often than you may think. Please ask me about the Family-First Protection Plan to cover children and grandchildren until they are 21. Please do this while you still can, and those who love you can rest easy knowing your choices will be honored. A Pre-Plan is a positive thing to have. We hope Dr. Kopecky has his.

Celebrating the 250th Navy Birthday Ball

On October 8, the Honolulu Navy League was proud to join in celebrating the 250th Navy Birthday Ball at the Hilton Hawaiian Village with Navy Region Hawaii and the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai. This milestone event honored two and a half centuries of the Navy’s proud heritage and the generations of Sailors who have served our nation with honor, courage, and commitment.

As a community partner, the Honolulu Navy League was honored to contribute to this memorable evening on Oahu and Kaua'i. We were thrilled to help enhance the celebration by bringing in our talented Hula Dancers, who shared the beauty of Hawaiian culture, and by brining Dave Livingston, a board member and photographer to capture the special moments of the night.

The Navy Birthday Ball is a time-honored tradition that reminds us of the enduring strength of our Sea Services and the strong community that supports them here in Hawai‘i. Bravo Zulu to the organizers, volunteers, and all who worked so hard to make this year’s celebration both meaningful and unforgettable.

USS Michael Murphy Pre-Deployment Fair

On October 14, the Honolulu Navy League was honored to support the USS Michael Murphy (DDG -112) at their Pre-Deployment Fair. We provided snacks, water, and a resource table for sailors and families as they prepare for the months ahead.

Our commitment extends far beyond deployment day—we proudly support sailors, FRGs, Ombudsman, Chief Mess and families, and command events throughout the deployment to help keep our Navy ‘ohana connected and resilient.

MilSpouse Fest Honolulu

On October 17 our incoming Executive Director, Ryan Brennan, had the opportunity to attend MilSpouse Fest at Schofield Barracks to talk about the incredible work the Honolulu Navy League does to strengthen connections between our military and local communities — and to share a bit about her own journey as a military spouse of nearly 18 years.

MilSpouseFest brings together spouses from all branches to connect, learn, and celebrate the resilience that defines our community, to share resources, and it was a great place for our community partners to come together and further support our military spouses and families.

SRS-33 and MAG-24 Trunk or Treats

On October 18, your Honolulu Navy League was excited to join our own R.D. Stethem Battalion – U.S. Naval Sea Cadets at the annual Submarine Readiness Squadron-33 Trunk or Treat! It was a perfect Hawaiian evening filled with treats, costume contests, and plenty of fun — a wonderful way to kick off the Halloween festivities with our amazing cadets and community.

The Halloween spirit continued the following week as we joined the Marine Aircraft Group 24 Trunk or Treat on October 24. Our team was thrilled to hand out candy to nearly 2,000 keiki, spreading smiles and a bit of Halloween cheer to military families and friends across Marine Corps Base Hawai‘i.

Mahalo to all who helped make both events such fun and memorable celebrations of community, service, and the season!

USCGC Cutter Oliver Berry (WPC-124) Homecoming

On October 27, the Honolulu Navy League team was honored to be on the pier to welcome home the US Coast Guard Cutter Oliver Berry (WPC 1124) following a successful deployment.

It was a wonderful morning spent alongside the ship’s families and fellow Coasties as we celebrated the crew’s safe return.

Our team was proud to share in the excitement—greeting the crew with smiles, snacks, and a heartfelt “welcome home.” These moments remind us of the dedication and sacrifice of our Coast Guard members who safeguard our waters and support missions throughout the Pacific.

Bravo Zulu to the Oliver Berry team for a safe and successful deployment, and thank you for your continued service to our nation and island community.

USS Tucson (SSN-770) Homecoming

On October 30, the Honolulu Navy League was proud to join families, friends, and shipmates in welcoming home the USS TUCSON (SSN 770) following a seven-month deployment to the Western Pacific.

It was a joyful morning on the waterfront as families reunited and celebrated the safe return of our Submarine Force heroes. The silent service plays a vital role in our nation’s defense, operating far from home and often without recognition—making moments like these all the more special.

The Honolulu Navy League was honored to be part of the celebration, sharing in the excitement and gratitude as the crew of the TUCSON returned safely to Pearl Harbor. Bravo Zulu to the entire team for a successful deployment and steadfast service beneath the seas!

USS Missouri (SSN 780) Homecoming

With October drawing to a close, the Honolulu Navy League was honored to be part of yet another incredible homecoming! The USS MISSOURI (SSN 780) — the Mighty Mo — returned to Pearl Harbor after a six-month deployment, extended from its original four-month plan.

It was a perfect Hawaiian afternoon filled with excitement, smiles, and even a welcoming rainbow that seemed to celebrate the crew’s safe return. The families’ joy and pride were unmistakable as they reunited with their loved ones from the deep.

Bravo Zulu to the crew of the Mighty Mo for a successful deployment and steadfast service beneath the seas—welcome home to Pearl Harbor!

Sea Cadets

The R. D. Stethem Battalion League Cadets and the Battleship Missouri Sea Cadets conducted a combined training drill onboard the US Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) Midgett (WMSL-757). The Midgett is a Legend-Class National Security Cutter (NSC) that specializes in maritime homeland security and is capable of conducting long range defense missions.

The cadets toured the Midgett and learned about its various spaces and ships functions from its own crew members. Knowledgeable Coast Guard Petty Officers and Chief Petty Officers assigned to the Midgett displayed their expertise and knowledge of the machinery, electronics, navigation, and defense systems that are utilized to operate this Legend-class NSC, the centerpiece of the Coast Guard’s Fleet.

The Midgett crew further challenged our cadets with training in at-sea search and rescue and lifesaving skills. Cadets were trained on how to safely retrieve a person “stranded” at sea using a training safety dummy. Cadets had to bring the stranded person onboard safely, securing the person to a search and rescue stretcher, and move them to a safe location for treatment. Cadets were then trained in medical techniques for conducting emergency medical care including how to take a person’s health vitals, recognizing symptoms of shock and hypothermia, and basic CPR skills.

After a long morning of training with some of the best the Coast Guard has to offer, our cadets got to know the Midgett crew a little more personally over lunch. The Midgett crew treated our cadets to a high-quality meal in the Midgett’s Galley, courtesy of the crew’s Culinary Specialists.

The USCGC Midgett and her crew provided our Sea Cadets with a truly unique experience and gave our cadets a direct perspective of their daily lives in the US Coast Guard and the challenges they so readily and courageously face to defend our great nation!
