Navy League honors a Key Spouse from each Service every year. This year they were treated to a UH Football game where they were recognized on the field before the game and each were recognized by the Mayor of Honolulu. NEW MARITIME NATION

Chinese Maritime Strategy and the PLAN with Toshi Yoshihara

In a new episode of Maritime Nation, Admiral Foggo (ret.) sits down with Toshi Yoshihara, Senior Fellow at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments (CSBA), to discuss the PLAN and China’s maritime strategy.

INDUSTRIAL BASE

Program Management in Shipbuilding

It is very obvious to everyone by now that we are in a shipbuilding revival in the United States.  This is by necessity as we counter a rising China and it’s quickly expanding Navy.  The current Administration is rightly leading the charge on this, and Congress is providing vast sums of money to improve our capabilities quickly.  There are several areas that need focus and resources if we are going to be successful.

The United States Needs to go Deep (Sea) With Allies to Compete with China

In April 2025, the Trump administration issued two Executive Orders (EO) to wean the United States away from China’s dominance in the maritime domain, making deep-sea mining and shipbuilding two of its priorities. However, the United States is still missing a clear strategy to link the two and make deep-sea mining its trump card against China’s grip on shipbuilding.

Maritime America: Sea Power, the Early Republic, and America’s Lost Maritime Strategic Tradition

Is the United States a maritime nation? Navalists are certainly fond of saying so. They point to America’s globe-bestriding navy, the global trade that fleet underwrites, and a maritime tradition that extends back to the establishment of the very first littoral and riparian settlements in seventeenth century North America. But today, tens of millions of Americans live in the country’s vast interior, far from the sound of crashing waves.

Waimānalo-based homeless community program Hui Mahi‘ai ‘Āina, run by Aunty Blanche McMillan, is expanding with help from the aio Foundation, which will lead the development of the project's next phase.

When I learned about the work and saw first-hand the work Aunty Blanche was doing at Hui Mahi‘ai ‘Āina, I knew this was something special that I wanted to support,” said Duane Kurisu, chairman of aio and aio Foundation, in a statement. “… Aunty Blanche has been a critical resource for the homeless by providing them shelter, a community, and a place to call home.”

With support from the state and City and County of Honolulu, the organizations plan to complete 31 new structures, including 24 village-style homes for individuals and families experiencing homelessness, by 2026.

The overall goal for this initial three-acre development on state-owned land is to serve 188 residents with homes, communal and outdoor spaces and essential facilities. The remaining 11 acres “will be used for agricultural purposes to build income-producing capacity for the sustenance of the Village,” according to developers.

We are so grateful to the amazing partners and donors who are supporting this expansion and saw our vision,” said McMillan in a statement. “Through aloha, faith and laulima, we are creating a place where people can heal, grow, and find hope again. This is what community looks like when we stand together.”

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, McMillan spearheaded the construction of nine tiny homes and two family homes at Hui Mahi‘ai ‘Āina for those who were displaced then from Waimānalo Beach Park.

No Home Price “Collapse”

Many of you may have recently seen a chart circulating on the internet suggesting a nationwide collapse in home prices is on the way, that we are in the “biggest bubble in history,” the collapse is “inevitable and nothing can stop it.”  The claim is that since home prices adjusted for general price inflation are even higher than they were in the previous bubble that peaked nearly twenty years ago, the coming crash “will be even worse.”

Just to refresh our recollections, the bursting of the last bubble led to a massive decline in home prices, with the national Case-Shiller home price index down 27% in the five years ending in early 2012.  An even larger decline today could be devasting for the US economy.

But we don’t think this is going to happen.

First, it’s important to recognize that one of the reasons housing is so unaffordable is that we have a set of government policies that boost home prices while reducing after-tax incomes.  These include state and local regulations that stifle home construction, government-sponsored enterprises that artificially boost mortgage lending while not boosting housing supply, and a fiscal spending and tax system that leaves potential homeowners with less ability to accumulate a down-payment or meet monthly income requirements.  When government at all levels spends more than 35% of GDP and the overall cost of government – including regulations, for example – is roughly 50% of GDP, there is less left over for what workers actually want versus what the government wants us to have.

Second, the same analyst now making apocalyptic warnings about the housing market did so in June 2019, since which home prices are up 57% overall or 7.6% per year, while the overall consumer price index was up 3.9% per year.

Third, there is a key difference between the bubble twenty years ago and the current environment.  We had massive over-building in the prior bubble, with housing starts averaging 1.9 million per year in 2002-06, versus an average of 1.5 million in the past five years.

To see the importance of housing supply, imagine a hypothetical world in which the government decided to ban all new housing construction.  What would we expect to happen to home prices relative to the general consumer price index?  Obviously, home prices would go way up due to limited supply.  Home prices would also be higher relative to wages.

Clearly, this would be bad policy; we would never want the government to ban home building.  But if it did so the rise in home prices relative to overall prices and wages would not be a “bubble,” it’s what the remaining market forces would require: higher home prices to reflect housing scarcity unless and until the government ended the idiotic ban on home building.

In a way, that’s what has happened, but not as extreme.  Government has limited homebuilding through environmental rules, zoning, and “affordability” concerns (the latter of which end up making home less affordable!).  And so homes are scarcer than they should be and home prices have gone up relative to the price of other goods and services.  In addition, with so much land unavailable for development, a larger population means higher prices, as well.

One issue to take note of in the housing market is that strict immigration enforcement so far this year is probably putting modest downward pressure on prices. Case-Shiller home prices were down 0.7% in August versus January.  Yes, strict enforcement should lift the cost of building new homes as the labor supply gets tighter.  But it also makes more rental units available for natives and legal immigrants, which should put downward pressure on rents and let potential home buyers wait longer before they buy.  In turn, that means downward pressure on the price of existing homes.

None of this is to say all is well with the US economy.  The stock market looks priced for perfection and is underestimating recession risk.  But a housing collapse is highly unlikely and a collapse even greater than the last one even more so.

You REALLY DO TAKE GREAT PHOTOS - For lots of these folks, it's probably the most recent good photo they have.

And you never get anyone with their mouth open or chewing or eyes closed... or you do a great job at editing them out.

I know it is appreciated, even when people don't say thank you.

Lauren Lawley Head, writer, as seen in TBJ Content Studio on Sept. 10, 2025. Lauren is a fulltime journalist and the founder

and CEO of Lawley Head Media, LLC and a resident of Dallas, Texas. Ms. Head wrote an article about Mayo Clinic Cardiologist Dr. Stephen Kopecky who has recurring cancer after 14 years. Now with a wife and three little  children, his goal is to see his
children graduate from grade school. His motto is: Death is inevitable, but premature death is not …. Dr. Kopecky says that mental
health has a significant impact on physical health. … The single largest psychological cause of heart disease mortality is pessimism; and pessimism has increased dramatically recently. Steps to increase optimism can yield big results.

A premature death has a way of putting parents and other family members in a state of complete devastation and becoming emotionally drained. This young doctor who often has a positive outlook for his patients, helping them to live longer, is now trying to have a more positive outlook on life for himself.

I have some good advice for him. We don’t know from the article whether he has a Pre-Plan or not, but it would make his optimism a little less difficult to achieve by knowing that he has already pre-planned for himself, his wife and children. In doing so, he can prevent some of their personal suffering and stress from getting any worse, while trying to arrange his sudden funeral/burial. He knows what’s in store for him, everything except the date.

Stay optimistic by just giving me a call. I will help you with your and your family’s Pre-Plans for traditional/casket or cremation. You can make the decisions now as to where you will be buried, or whether your wishes are to be cremated and your ashes scattered, or whether you want a niche, a family plot, or have your own mausoleum, etc. By being completely prepared, you will be able to give peace of mind to those close to you and to yourself. I can help you just like I have assisted more than 10,000 Hawaii families and individuals make their plans for cremation or burial.

You can also add a lifetime travel plan for $599 in case you or your children should die while away from home. This life-time travel plan will bring your body back home—a procedure that can cost thousands of dollars and occurs more often than you may think. Please ask me about the Family-First Protection Plan to cover children and grandchildren until they are 21. Please do this while you still can, and those who love you can rest easy knowing your choices will be honored. A Pre-Plan is a positive thing to have. We hope Dr. Kopecky has his.

Celebrating the 250th Navy Birthday Ball

On October 8, the Honolulu Navy League was proud to join in celebrating the 250th Navy Birthday Ball at the Hilton Hawaiian Village with Navy Region Hawaii and the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai. This milestone event honored two and a half centuries of the Navy’s proud heritage and the generations of Sailors who have served our nation with honor, courage, and commitment.

As a community partner, the Honolulu Navy League was honored to contribute to this memorable evening on Oahu and Kaua'i. We were thrilled to help enhance the celebration by bringing in our talented Hula Dancers, who shared the beauty of Hawaiian culture, and by brining Dave Livingston, a board member and photographer to capture the special moments of the night.

The Navy Birthday Ball is a time-honored tradition that reminds us of the enduring strength of our Sea Services and the strong community that supports them here in Hawai‘i. Bravo Zulu to the organizers, volunteers, and all who worked so hard to make this year’s celebration both meaningful and unforgettable.

USS Michael Murphy Pre-Deployment Fair

On October 14, the Honolulu Navy League was honored to support the USS Michael Murphy (DDG -112) at their Pre-Deployment Fair. We provided snacks, water, and a resource table for sailors and families as they prepare for the months ahead.

Our commitment extends far beyond deployment day—we proudly support sailors, FRGs, Ombudsman, Chief Mess and families, and command events throughout the deployment to help keep our Navy ‘ohana connected and resilient.

MilSpouse Fest Honolulu

On October 17 our incoming Executive Director, Ryan Brennan, had the opportunity to attend MilSpouse Fest at Schofield Barracks to talk about the incredible work the Honolulu Navy League does to strengthen connections between our military and local communities — and to share a bit about her own journey as a military spouse of nearly 18 years.

MilSpouseFest brings together spouses from all branches to connect, learn, and celebrate the resilience that defines our community, to share resources, and it was a great place for our community partners to come together and further support our military spouses and families.

SRS-33 and MAG-24 Trunk or Treats

On October 18, your Honolulu Navy League was excited to join our own R.D. Stethem Battalion – U.S. Naval Sea Cadets at the annual Submarine Readiness Squadron-33 Trunk or Treat! It was a perfect Hawaiian evening filled with treats, costume contests, and plenty of fun — a wonderful way to kick off the Halloween festivities with our amazing cadets and community.

The Halloween spirit continued the following week as we joined the Marine Aircraft Group 24 Trunk or Treat on October 24. Our team was thrilled to hand out candy to nearly 2,000 keiki, spreading smiles and a bit of Halloween cheer to military families and friends across Marine Corps Base Hawai‘i.

Mahalo to all who helped make both events such fun and memorable celebrations of community, service, and the season!

USCGC Cutter Oliver Berry (WPC-124) Homecoming

On October 27, the Honolulu Navy League team was honored to be on the pier to welcome home the US Coast Guard Cutter Oliver Berry (WPC 1124) following a successful deployment.

It was a wonderful morning spent alongside the ship’s families and fellow Coasties as we celebrated the crew’s safe return.

Our team was proud to share in the excitement—greeting the crew with smiles, snacks, and a heartfelt “welcome home.” These moments remind us of the dedication and sacrifice of our Coast Guard members who safeguard our waters and support missions throughout the Pacific.

Bravo Zulu to the Oliver Berry team for a safe and successful deployment, and thank you for your continued service to our nation and island community.

USS Tucson (SSN-770) Homecoming

On October 30, the Honolulu Navy League was proud to join families, friends, and shipmates in welcoming home the USS TUCSON (SSN 770) following a seven-month deployment to the Western Pacific.

It was a joyful morning on the waterfront as families reunited and celebrated the safe return of our Submarine Force heroes. The silent service plays a vital role in our nation’s defense, operating far from home and often without recognition—making moments like these all the more special.

The Honolulu Navy League was honored to be part of the celebration, sharing in the excitement and gratitude as the crew of the TUCSON returned safely to Pearl Harbor. Bravo Zulu to the entire team for a successful deployment and steadfast service beneath the seas!

USS Missouri (SSN 780) Homecoming

With October drawing to a close, the Honolulu Navy League was honored to be part of yet another incredible homecoming! The USS MISSOURI (SSN 780) — the Mighty Mo — returned to Pearl Harbor after a six-month deployment, extended from its original four-month plan.

It was a perfect Hawaiian afternoon filled with excitement, smiles, and even a welcoming rainbow that seemed to celebrate the crew’s safe return. The families’ joy and pride were unmistakable as they reunited with their loved ones from the deep.

Bravo Zulu to the crew of the Mighty Mo for a successful deployment and steadfast service beneath the seas—welcome home to Pearl Harbor!

Sea Cadets

The R. D. Stethem Battalion League Cadets and the Battleship Missouri Sea Cadets conducted a combined training drill onboard the US Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) Midgett (WMSL-757). The Midgett is a Legend-Class National Security Cutter (NSC) that specializes in maritime homeland security and is capable of conducting long range defense missions.

The cadets toured the Midgett and learned about its various spaces and ships functions from its own crew members. Knowledgeable Coast Guard Petty Officers and Chief Petty Officers assigned to the Midgett displayed their expertise and knowledge of the machinery, electronics, navigation, and defense systems that are utilized to operate this Legend-class NSC, the centerpiece of the Coast Guard’s Fleet.

The Midgett crew further challenged our cadets with training in at-sea search and rescue and lifesaving skills. Cadets were trained on how to safely retrieve a person “stranded” at sea using a training safety dummy. Cadets had to bring the stranded person onboard safely, securing the person to a search and rescue stretcher, and move them to a safe location for treatment. Cadets were then trained in medical techniques for conducting emergency medical care including how to take a person’s health vitals, recognizing symptoms of shock and hypothermia, and basic CPR skills.

After a long morning of training with some of the best the Coast Guard has to offer, our cadets got to know the Midgett crew a little more personally over lunch. The Midgett crew treated our cadets to a high-quality meal in the Midgett’s Galley, courtesy of the crew’s Culinary Specialists.

The USCGC Midgett and her crew provided our Sea Cadets with a truly unique experience and gave our cadets a direct perspective of their daily lives in the US Coast Guard and the challenges they so readily and courageously face to defend our great nation!
